Today we spent some time exporing. First a quick look at John Flynn's grave just outside of town. Here was a guy on a mission. Started the Inland Mission concept bringing services to outback communities throughout Australia including churches and hospitals. He then went on to found the Royal Flying Doctor Service - a really busy guy.
Next a vist to the old Telegraph Repeater Station just outside Alice Springs. This building was part of 12 repeater stations along the 300km of the telegraph. An incredible engineering story where the entire 3000km was built in less than 4 years. As with other areas the station became the centre of a small village.
One of the great things about this place is that local school children come here as part of their classes to dress in traditional costume and perform everday tasks as they were in early 1900s such as washing, ironing and baking as well as old fashioned schoolwork such as reciting times tables.
Just near the Telegraph Station is Trig Hill - named because it was used as a suvey point for the official mapping of the area in the 1860s. Great view of Alice Springs from here.
Also nearby to the station is the original springs after which the town in named - not a big body of water however an important permanent water source.
