Day 25 - Coober Pedy at Last

04/05/11

Today we drove the 250km to Coober Pedy.  Not a lot in between - the most noticable thing being the amount oif green everywhere. although some don't appreciate it fully

When seeing it like this it makes one wonder why there are not endless fields of crops - hard to comprehend that this is not the natural state for thsi country.

Not sure what the zebra crossing is for - there are a lot of emus around so maybe it's for them?

On the approach to Coober Pedy its quite a shock to see the amount of mining activity around this town.  Its also a littel surprising to see the amount of buildings above ground - although we're assured by one of the locals that there's still 85% of peoiple live undergournd.

After settling in at the caravan park we went to visit Crocodile Harrys place.

This guy was a local eccentric (now dead) who had a thing for the girls - his place is full of comments from people all over the world - a unique place.

After this we went to see an underground home owned by a lady who arrived here in the 1950s as a young single lady when there was 800 people in Coober Pedy with 8 women.  She then proceeded to dig out this home using pick and shovel and a wheelbarrow.  Its an impressive place

Then back to the caravan park and had a yarn with 5 other couples who come from all over Aus who are working their way around the country.
