Day 36 - Palm Valley

15/05/11

Today we headed off to Palm Valley 100km west of here.

First stop Hermannsburg - a small settlement of 150 mostly aboriginal. Had a quick squiz at the Lutheran Mission there - part of the program started by John Flynn to bring services to the outback.

Then down the road to the Palm Valley turn off and 21km off-road. A great track full of sand and rock areas as well as creek crossings - lots of fun getting there.

Arrived at the valley - the palms grow in a 2km stretch along the valley where the permanent water conditions aloow.  Sean, Andrew, Dirk and I went on the 5km walk around the valley - an oasis in the desert! Saw where the recent summer floods had come through - would have been spectacular.

After our walk then had a picnic lunch and started back. Dirk was very excited doing this track and wanted to stop and take photos many times.

I asked him if he would like to drive and he was like a kid in a chocolate shop. He really enjoyed himself.

Then I took over for the last part and we went through the last creek crossing fast and everyone got a bit wet and had a good laugh.

Then back to camp, some dinner then spent the very cold evening huddled around a fire with the German chicksandtheir traveling companions including three lads - one German, one Italian, and one Columbian.

Dirk stayed up with German chick Julia very late - they getting along well.
