What a spectacular place! Took us 5.5hrs to do the 6km walk. The first section is a climb up steep stairs to get to the top of the canyon where we have great views of the canyon and surrounds.
Then a meandering track through the pancake like rock domes that make up much of the surrounds.
Next we reach the edge of the cliffs and travel along here for a while. Amazing outcrops of rock where one can stand at the edge and look straight down - dizzying stuff. We all felt adventurous however Dirk preferred the kamakasi approach. He was scariing us silly with his antics.
Yes thats Dirk again - we began planning the letter we would have to send home to his mother. The rock formations are grand and the photos are inadequate.
As part of a sidetrack we crossed Coterells bridge (we were later to meet the man who built it) which let to cool lookout.
Next a detour to the Graden of Eden - not a patch on the real one no doubt however still a beautiful oasis within this panorama. A couple of young blokes (Germans of course - seems everyone we meet now is German) took to the water though it was icy cold.
We walked for a little with a young couple - he from NZ she from Aus. Jess is a tour guide in Kakadu so we may catch up with her again. After leaving the Garden of Eden we then continued around the end of the gorge and along the other side - Wow!. Our thrillseeking friend is at it again.
A quick rest then onto the track leading down and finally back to the carpark.
After such a wonderful walk we should be tired however after getting back to camp we're ready to go partying. There is a local band called The Roadies on so off we go.
Sean was very excited and found himself on stage for "Gimme a Home Among the Gum Trees" and having a ball (we had been playing Australiana songs for the boys on the drive up here yesterday). Everyone liked him so much they kept him up there for the next song.
Then its Dad's turn and then Mum.
Then they played a few old Elvis songs and the lady who was on stage next to Sean at the beginning came and asked him to dance - she was really taken with him and thought he was the bees knees.
Of course our boys were also roped into doing a spot.
Finally Sean actually asked to go back up again so he could sing "Tie me Kangaroon Down Sport" - a great night had by all.
