Started the day with a beautiful outback sunrise at Copley, Spent the morning preparing the van for the next few nights free camping.
Left Copley at midday and on the road north. First stop Leigh Creek coal mine – they have a lookout and some old mining gear to check out.
Next is Lyndhurst – this is where we came in 2002 to see the total eclipse of the sun. We stopped in at the pub for a beer then onwards – from now on all unsealed roads.
Next checked out yet another town in ruins called Farina. Once again it was established in 1870s – once again established based on the old Ghan railway – once again died once the railway was diverted west in 1950s. It seems a very common scenario around here.
Next stop Maree - had a look around Maree then headed for a camping spot called Poole Creek 40km north of Maree.
By the time we got to the spot sun was setting and we were travelling directly west so it got a bit hairy. Actually missed Poole Creek and ended up at a spot where there are sculptures in a paddock – we’ll check them out properly tomorrow morning. Land is getting salty now – white showing all round.
The sculptures include a couple of planes stood on end. Finished the day with a great outback sunset.
