Time to leave this lovely spot at Berry Springs - packed up and Sean said farewell to Cooper. As we drove out we checked out the local crocs which live in a fenced off area in the middle of the park. There is also a natural billabong within 100m of the park.
Finally we left and made our way towards Litchfield National Park via Batchelor.
First stop the Termite Mounds. While we had seen many of these the ones here are built by "magnetic" termites. Sounds weird but refers to a genetic enhancement that programs magnetic north into these creatures who then proceed to build their mounds in north/south alignment. This is meant to give them advantage with keeping even temperatures in the colony. So we see a large number of mounds all built in the same plane.
There are a couple of large examples of the ordinary kind as well.
Next stop Wangi Falls - unfortunately closed for swimming at the moment due to bitey things , however a beautiful spot anyway. Turns out that these and all the other falls around Litchfield run all year round with a surge during the wet, because the surrounding plains are sandstone and absorb a lot of the water, then release it slowly over the year.
We arrived at our camping spot Litchfield Safari Camp and set up. We found out along the way that Jude's cousin Leonie (from Katherine) was staying n the same place so we hooked up and had dinner with them. The group included Leonie and her son Jacob, her friend Meagan with 3 kids, and another couple Janet and Jacques and their 3 kids so quite a crowd.
