Day 103 - Exploring Kununurra

21/07/11

Started off today with Rosie doing some socialising with a new friend Bonnie.

Then off to check out the Ivanhoe Crossing about 10km downstream from Diversion Dam (which is on the western edge of town) - this dam was the first piece done of the Ord River Scheme to create Lake Kununurra which looks more like a river.  Ivanhoe Crossing is a hairy looking path across the river which is closed for the whole wet season and varies otherwise.  At the moment it is still high because of the larger than normal wet season.

We went for a drive around the long way (about 25km of dirt road to get to the other bank as well, then had a squiz at the Diversion Dam wall - wow there is some water moving through here.  We threw in a line anyway and caught a couple of baby barramundi.

After lunch Jude and I went to see The Hoochery - a local distillery where we sampled some of the local white lightning.

On the way back we stopped at the Sandalwood Factory - the area around Kununurra has been identified as an ideal growing area for Indian Sandalwood and there are many plantation crops around the area.  The first commercial crops will be harvested in 3 years time - they use the wood for making furniture etc however the oil extracted is used extensively in makeup and medicinal products - there is also a large market for incense.

After getting back to the van we washed doggie in flea shampoo.  She had been getting attacked by both fleas and ticks since Katherine - hopefully after this wash and a flea treatment she'll be free of them from now on.
