Day 104 - Wyndham

22/07/11

Up early today and off to see Wyndham 100km north of Kununurra.  Got there via a gravel road which follows the river to the sea.  Along the way we saw Black Rock Falls (although they aren't running at the moment and checked out the river which still has a great deal of wet stuff flowing through.

Good to see the graders out working the roads - certainly makes life easier without those corrugations.

Next stop along this road is Perry Lagoon - more water!  This one has a specially built viewing platform where one can sit and watch the wildlife for a while - very pretty.

Then we made it to Wyndham.  This is a port city where more of our minerals leave the country.  Apparently another new iron ore mine has just opened with another coming soon, so this small town of 2,000 people is due to boom along with all the other places in WAs north - no doubt there'll me many more coming to see the Bic Croc despite it being cyclone country.

The ruins below are of the old telegraph station which used to relay messages to ships at sea during WW1.

We dropped into the pub and introduced ourselves to Sue (friends of Malcolm and Linda) - had a good chat and a feed of their barra and chips.  Sue tells us they've just put the pub on the market - a great opportunity for someone with lots of drive and a couple of spare $M.

This is barra country so naturally we tried throwing in a line at the floating pontoon jetty however the 7m tide was running so fast it was a lost cause.  Sue told us that there had been a 5m croc worrying boats around this jetty so we didn't spend a lot of time there.

In the local caravan park is a truly enormous boab tree which is estimated to be more than 2000 years old - wow!

Next we drove up the hill behind town to the five rivers lookout.  It's a spectacular view of the surrounding country where one can appreciate how all the rivers conglomerate into the Cambridge Gulf and finally out to sea.

Lovely drive back down the sealed highway, then dinner and a movie.
