Day 87 - Darwin Dam

05/07/11

We decided today that we would spend another 2 nights here at Berry Springs - really enjoying the spot and meeting some lovely people.

Headed for the Darwin River Dam only 10km from our camp.  First passed by the camp office where there is a billabong and the freshwater crocs sun themselves right there in the park behind a fence.

The dam is impressive - not sure how it rates as dams go but it looks bloody big.  Built in 1972 it is the water supply for Darwin.  Interestingly they don't allow any sort of recreational activity here at all - thought that they'd allow some fishing swimming etc but none at all.

After the dam we wound around some back roads and got lost - as we passed by an area which had been recently burnt we noticed the new green growth of the cycads - we'd been told they are the first to come after the fire.

We found a small creek crossing with a nice creek area so we stopped for a while and threw in a lure - nothing going.

On another section of the road we came across this unnamed billabong - no less pretty than those with names.

After a pleasant morning checking the dam and finding our way round the back roads - back to camp then Sean and I went back to Berry Springs but this time we took the snorkeling gear.  Was able to get down to the bottom of the main pool (7-8m) and have a good look around.  Lots of mud trees etc but in amongst them I stumbled across a $50 note half buried in the mud.

Back to the van dinner and bed.
