Day 86 - Wildlife Park

04/07/11

Today we spent the day at the Territory Wildlife Park.  Once we arrived we checked out the arrival area which includes a glass cage witha very large king brown.

Then we headed to the Flight Zone and checked out the show there.  It included this buzzard  which uses a unique method for opening emu eggs -picks up a nearby rock and uses it to make a crack in the egg.

Next were the parrots including lorrikeets and white cockatoos and the beautifl red tailed black cockatoos.  The presenter informed us the white cockys can live up to 80yrs while the black ones can be up to 100yrs.

Next the white headed kite - able to catch its food in flight - cool trick.

After the show the presenters brought out some birds for us to have a close up look.  This eagle was impressive. then a barking owl - they assured us that it would make its barking noise however despite many people madly barking it remained silent.

Then Sean was able to have a pic with the Rufus Owl.

Then we checked the Nocturnal House and a talk about bats - this guy was quite entertaining.

Next to the billabong and checked out the local pelicans including their 3 week old chicks.

Next to the aquarium where they have a large variety of freshwater and saltwater life all from the top end.

Then had a look at goose lagoon - the main attracvtion here being the great water lillies out in flower.

Next the aviary area which is split up into several different small areas representing each of the environemnts found up here.  The first one has a cool simulation of the wet season with a sprinkler system providing the rain along with some thunder and lightning.

Had a great day at the park then back to the van and a couple of hours in the pool before dinner and bed.
