Day 107 - The Savannah Way

25/07/11

We left our camp - this is one of many throughout WA - each spot is well signed and the facilities are basic -(bush toilets and rubbish bins) and at this time of year are always full.  We have been told that camping outside of these designated areas can bring large fines so we're sticking to them.  We enjoyed having the locals paying a visit this morning (we had cattle grazing in the paddock next to the van last night - drove the dog crazy).

We continued along the Savannah Way which stretches from Cairns to Broome.  This road is also part of the Great Northern Highway in WA which starts in Perth and goes as far as Wyndham in the north.

We noticed the landscape changing along the way as we began heading north west.  Last night it was quite chilly and we were tucked under the doona.  Today we've moved north again and the boab trees are back and its much warmer.  Mostly the landscape has been very flat and dry with low bush however there are spots where it rises in eroded hills which reminded us of the American western landscapes.

We passed through Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing - we've decided to drive straight through today and spend more time in these places on the way back.  We checked out a camp ground at Mary Pools on the Mary River - a very popular place with maybe 150 vans parked there.  In the end we continued to the next camp site which while not the same views, took us within striking distance of Derby.

We stopped in the reasonably crowded camp site and enjoyed a lovely sunset which was accompanied by a large smoke cloud from bushfires burning up towards Derby.
