Day 66 - Adelaide River

14/06/11

Before leaving this lovely spot, we went for another drive down the river and checked out some more picturesque waterholes - no crocs though.  Last night the people currently managing the park told us that over the last 2 years they had to be evacuated twice because the crocs were coming into houses.  One guy told us of waking up to hear a banging noise - then discovering a 5m salty banging its head against his front door.

While Mum was having a drive we came across another herd of Brahman (there have been many) but this one had a new addition.

We made it to Adelaide River 80km down the road and found that we could stay in the showgrounds there for a modest fee so we set up camp right next to the starting gates.

Next we went to have a look at the War Cemetery.  There are many reminders of the war around this area.  Adelaide River was bombed and nine people in the post office perished along with several others around the town - a big blow for such a small community.  The cemetery is maintained by the War Graves Commission and is beautifully presented.

Next, on a lighter note, the Adelaide River Inn which has the dubious claim to fame of supplying the buffalo for the Crocodile Dundee movie.

Next we visited the Railway Heritage Centre.  The original telegraph line installation was the catalyst for this town as with so many other.  The first railway line was built in 1880s and there have been two further replacement lines since then to the current.  This place is full of the old machinery used to make and maintain the lines and the old steam locomotives.  We chatted with the n-site caretaker and it was obvious that he loved trains - appears he is in his ideal job.

Then back to the van, dinner and some chat before turning in.
