Day 65 - A Pleasant Detour

13/06/11

We packed up at Pine Creek and hit the highway again.

Next stop yet another roadhouse - this one Emerald Springs where some smart cookie saw something in this rock.

Next we took a detour from the main drag and headed for Douglas Daly Park about 60km down the road.  The termites are busy again out this way - the mounds are lighter in colour and larger than further south however they are no less prolific.

On the way we came across this deserted grain silo - strange to see out here.  We learnt from a local later that night - it had been built in the 1970s as part of a government sponsored effort to grow sorghum and maize in these parts.  It operated for only a few years before the effort was abandoned and it now sits rotting away.

We arrived at our home for the night.  After setting up we went exploring along the river - there are several bush campsites and some beautiful spots along the way.

After seeing all these inviting waterholes in which we could not swim, Sean and I decided to go get wet in the pool instead and found it had some wildife of its own.

The lady here removing the small python tells us it is the only snake that can eat cane toads without being poisoned.  The small dead cane toad Sean found at the bottom of the pool gave credence to her words. Then a quick play in the pool - couldn't stay too long - water temp still quite low.

That night we are able to have a fire just outside the van and eat our fritters around it.
