Woke up to another nice sunrise here before getting on the road again.
Next stop along the way is Daly Waters which consists of a pub and 2 houses. The pub is a real peice of work - has everything you could think of handing from the ceiling including t-shirts, underwear, shoes, money, number plates - you name it. They also have a wicked sense of humour which is evident in the various signs around the place - plenty of character here. This place is famous for the Beef n Barra meal they provide every night - so much so that you have to make a booking to ensure you get one.
Among the walls of number plates we found this one which our German friend Drik must have left behind.
Then along the track a little more to the next place Larrimah which surprisingly has a quirky pub - this one with a Pink Panther theme. This one's claim to fame is the highest bar in NT - another ecclectic collection of stuff. These pubs are great and give people a creative outlet and provide visitors with a real taste of Aus.
This one also boasts an on-site zoo as evidenced here by the owner feeding this 2 week old parrot at the bar.
One of the unmissable features of the country along the way are the termite mounds. Theres not just a few here and there - they litterally cover the landscape - its hurts the mind to imagine hwo many termites there are in this territory - these things cover the grounf for hundreds of kilometers!
Passed through Makaranta on our way to Katherine. This looks interesting but we passed through knowing that we'll be coming back this way on our return trip. It does boast this giant termite mound in town.
We had planned to stop at a free camping spot 20km north of Mataranka howeveronce we got there we realised there's only 80km to Katherine so we kept going. Jude had yesterday spoken to her cousin Leonie who lives near Katherine and they have invited us to park the van at their place so away we went. Drove through Katherine and 5km north to their place in the bush. Had a lovely time chatting with Leonie and husband John.
Today is my dad's birthday so hope he's having a good one - happy birthday dad!
