Up early and packed up to get on the road to Katherine again. We were able to once again go to cousin Leonie's place. Her and John were in Darwin but we were able to go to the house and set up camp anyway. Once set up we went to have a look at Springvale Homestead just outside town. This homestead was set up in the 1880s by Alfred Giles who was a linesman on the telegraph. The building is one of the few remaining original homesteads in NT and has a lovely river frontage. In the 1998 floods the building was inundated and it looked like the end, however the government chipped in to get it refurbished and opened to the public and now includes a caravan park as well.
There are four huge Indian Rain trees (so called cause the leaves curl up at night and collect moisture then open in the mornings) Each one planted in 1890s on the occasion of each Giles child's birth. Also boasts a boab tree which do not normally grow here - this one specially planted by the owners.
