Our Broome Scout Camp was with the aboriginal Djarindjin Scout Group which is right next to Lombadina community near Cape Leveque. After a 3.5hr trip the night before and setting up camp in the dark, a good night's sleep was warranted - special permission was granted via scouts. We were camped on privately owned aboriginal land on the sand dunes near to Chile Creek. Following a late start to the morning, the rest of the camp was set up.
Sean was part of latrine duty again - a 44gall drum over a big hole. (he got the gig at Alice Springs as well).
After breakfast we geared ourselves up to go for a hike to find a water well. Our search was led by Audrey - the leader of the Djarindjin group. The wells were originally dug by their ancestors - they've dug out the sand until reaching a layer of mud where water seeps through from a natural fresh water spring. The boys took turns digging mud out the hole to get at the water while the others sat in the shade.
The kids found this water holding frog just near the well.
After about 3km walk over sand dunes in the heat of the day we finally arrived at a swimming spot - where everyone jumped in to cool off despite someone spotting a black shark.
After cooling off we headed back to camp and came across another great swimming spot at Chile Creek. Some went swimming and others fished while the tide was high.
Got back to camp and had lunch then free time for the kids. During this time one of the local kids Abanda took Sean off to show him how to make a fishing spear the Wongi tree.
Some of the kids had fun burying each other in the sand including local girl Nai.
Dinner was cooked by the kids in camp ovens and included lamb. pork. chicken. beef and roast veges.
After dinner everyone piled into cars and drove back over the sand dunes to Djarindjin community hall for a disco with some of the locals.
John had a chill out day at Barnhill by himself - went fishing with no luck again.
