Day 120 - Broome Scout Camp Day Two

07/08/11

Some of the kids woke early to go fishing - the rest of us rose late again.

Brian (Caveman), a local who started the Djaradjin scout group, took us on a field trip to look at some ancient footprints in the stone and to check on the well we had cleaned out the day before.

He explained that this well was dug in the late 1800s by the aborigines who lived here at the time.  The water holding frog we'd found yesterday was also found in the well today.  Although the mud had settled a lot from yesterday it was still considered too dirty to try so we moved on.

Caveman then took us to see some fossilised footprints in the sandstone.  He explained that they were believed to be 7-8000 years old and were footprints of his ancestors.

After this we made our way back to camp and had a late breakfast then began packing up the gear for the trip home.

Before leaving camp we went back to Chile Creek where the Djaradjin group was swimming.  The creek at low tide today looked very difference from yesterday's high tide.

These aboriginal people were very shy, quiet and unassuming - full of fun. love and laughter.  It was a wonderful cultural eye opener for Sean and I - a pity many more Australians could not share such an experience.  I was excited to have a personal invitation from Audrey to come back and visit any time.

John spent the day relocating the van back to Broome from Barnhill - he came picked us up from the scout hall in Broome after we arrived back about 3.30pm.
