Left our overnight stop early so we could travel the remaining 120km to Fitzroy Crossing - then continued on another 20km to Gieke Gorge and made it for the 8.30am boat ride in the gorge.
A pleasant ride where we had great views of the ancient walls of the gorge - originally part of the same ocean reef system as Winjdara about 140km north west of here.
The Fitzroy river runs through the gorge which lies approx half way along the 600km river which in turn enters the sea at Wyndham into the Cambridge Gulf, There are some interesting shapes in the rocks caused by the massive water movement through the river. There are also a lot of bird species including these little guys who build their nests on the cliff under hang
Plenty of freshwater crocs around including these guys resting on an exposed rock which is only just appearing as water levels continue to drop.
This rock formation has 2 logs jammed in the rock - the higher one (approx 8m above current water level) landed there after the 2002 wet and the lower one from the 2011 wet.
After our boat ride we headed back into Fitzroy Crossing and checked out the original road crossing which was impassable for a good part of the year.
Had a quick look through town then on the road again with doggie wanting to do the driving while asleep.
Down the road another 150km to Mary Pools (about 100km short of Halls Creek). A very busy free vamping spot where after speaking to our neighbours (who it turns out had Dalny connections) we ended up being entertained by Colin and his partner Poi/ Colin and Poi spend 6 months in Aus and the other 6 months in Thailand. He pulled out a lot of oldies and had everyone singing along - also managed to pull quite a crowd.
