Up early at Mary Pools and headed into Halls Creek - booked into caravan park so we could leave the van there and travel onto Wolfe Creek Crater (had to do this after seeing the movie). This involves a 120km trip down the unsealed Tanami Road. The first 80km were great then we caught up with the grader still working on the road - after that it became a wee bit bumpy - still time to admire the wildflowers.
Then turned off for a 20km trip down to the crater - very rough road - no grading happening here. The crater is part of private station land and they do not encourage visitors. The crater itself is certainly unique - 850km across and not even known to the while man until 1947.
Bumped our way back to Tanami Road and stopped a little way down the track for some lunch before ploughing on - even he road trains finding it hard going.
Finally made it back to Halls Creek and went to have a look at Old Halls Creek 20km out of town. Not much left now but was thriving with gold fever in late 1800s. The most substantial ruins remaining include the old post office and mission school.
Then on the way back into town dropped in to see the China Wall - an amazing natural wall formed from the original ocean reef system.
Then back to the van for some dinner and cleaning up.
