Day 6,7&8 Broken Hill Here we are

15/04/11

We're now spending 4 nights all together at Broken Hill - a time to catch up on things before we head off towards Lake Eyre.
Spent a good portion of today catching up with a cousin of Judy's who she hasn't met since she was a toddler.  They spent a few hours catching up on all the family gossip over a couple of cups of tea.  Her cousin Helen and husband Colin have lived in Broken Hill for 40 years.  Colin is a 3rd generation Broken Hill boy and spent a good portion of his working life working underground in the mines, so he had some interesting tales to tell.

Today spent getting some items for the vehicle including a UHF radio which I installed myself.  Also some grocery shopping prior to our departure on Monday.  Also charging batteries, topping up gas and fuel supplies etc.

Today was a rest day till lunch then we went to a local Golf Club where the 1st tee is green, the rest are all dirt.   Then off for a little sight seeing - 1st to the Broken Hill airport to check out the Flying doctor service - interesting that Pro Hart donated his time to paint full wall size murals at the airport..

Next it was off to the lookout and cafe at the top of the South Mine (no longer active), which sits atop a small man made mountain created from all the displaced earth.  At the lookout is an over-sized park bench which gives a great view of the town as well as a good photo op.  This place also includes a great assortment of old mining equipment along with a Memorial to the Miners which covers all deaths in the mines from 1880 till now.

Then after this it was off to a place called "The Living Desert" about 6km out of town.  We arrived just at sunset to look at these sculptures which were put here by a assortment of artists from a host of countries in early 1990's and placed atop this lookout.  The collection includes one which shows off the sunset through a hole in the sculpture - we arrived just in time.

We are planning to leave tomorrow after getting the vehicle checked before the next leg to Lake Eyre.
