Easter Sunday and we’re off to church at Hawker, 40km south from where we are staying. Found it really hard to find a church meeting of any kind even today. The Catholic service wasn’t until 3pm and the Uniting church had no service at all (only on 1st,3rd and 5th Sundays). We ended up at a gathering of the local Christian Fellowship and there were eight of us all up (not counting the extra in the garden).
Then 20km south of Hawker to visit some aboriginal paintings – interesting but not sensational, but a good view from up at the caves.
Next stop Hawker Caravan Park to catch up with the people we met on the road out of Broken Hill – Werner Tracey and family. They are from Geelong and on their way home from their Easter break. Had a cuppa and a chinwag with them and Sean had a chance to have a play with the kids which was great.
Back to our camp Rawnsley Park Station to start packing up to leave in the morning – a lovely sunset over the bluff above camp as the boy plays another video game oblivious to it.
Then Sean and I went out at 7.30pm to the airstrip just down from the camp to attend a stargazing night. An astronomer from Adelaide with a fairly high powered telescope, talked and showed us several items of interest including nearby stars (Alpha Centauri, Beetlejuice, and Sirus) the Jewel Box (open cluster) and a globular cluster. Sean really enjoyed it though he became very tired near the end at 9.30pm and it was quite cool. At the finish everyone jumped in their cars and took off – it was still so dark that the first 6 cars including us ended up driving down the runway thinking it was the way out, luckily we couldn’t see each other’s red faces.
