Day 150 - Winton More Dinosaurs

06/09/11

Before leaving Winton checked out the Matilda Centre - an entire complex dedicated to our national song.  Felt it a bit overdone and decided not to fork out the $80 bucke to have a look inside.

Next the Musical Fence - someone really thought this one out.  They've built a fairly standard fence but tensioned the wire so one can use metal or wooden sticks (conveniently supplied to get some interesting sounds out of the wires.  Also in this little park is assortment of unrealted objects jumbled together to make all sorts of sounds including a dubious looking drum set - would need our friend Glenn to come and get something tuneful from these.

Next to teh Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum.  Although a uick trip through some beatifully restored vehicles.

Next a quick stop at the Matilda Caravn Park to visit Jollie the dog - this dog was left with the park owners by Dennis and Nola (who we met and spent time with in Broome with their dog Bonnie) - they vistied the park a couple of years ago and ended up leaving her to find a new home there.  She's done well and owner Tammy showed off the ribbons she has won since.

On the way out of town passed a great deal of motorbikes going the other way and lined up at the servos - apparently a safari of some sort - there must have been 300 odd bikes!

Next a visit to the Age of Dinosaurs Experience 20km out of town.  Sean and Jude went to the show and Sean got to got up close a personal with some of the bones.  This area is a working laboratory and they continue to dog the area and are still finding more fossils.

After this travelled 180km down the road to longreach where we stayed the night at a freebie 4km out of town alongside the Thompson River.  Not long after we arrived had 2 camper trailers pull up beside us - none other than our Toowoomba friends from Winton.

Went into town to have a look at QANTAS museum although only checked out the entry to the place.  While it looked very interesting and included various tours through a 707 and 747 (as well as an option to walk on the wing of 747) we found the prices rather steep - from $20 to $90 per person.  On the list of Foundation Donors we found one Bill Witt - wondered whether Jude's father had held back on telling us something?
